Shosholoza: An African Dream
TheSailingChannel presents a new mini-documentary by our partner, SailTV. Shosholoza: An African Dream captures the new spirit of South Africa through the drama and excitement of an America’s Cup challenge sponsored by T-Systems. Behind the scenes is the Izivunguvungu Sailing School, a non-profit founded in 1997 by SA Olympic sailor Ian Ainslie. The school teaches disadvantaged youth life skills through sail training. Part of the MSC Foundation, the school’s key benefactor is Captain Salvatore Sarno who also serves as the Managing Director of Team Shosholoza. Assisting with the youth sailing program is the South African Navy. Together, their efforts are changing the lives of the poorest of South Africa’s children: instilling pride through the discipline of sailing and national identity through positive role models, black and white, crewing aboard Team Shosholoza. Bowman, Golden Mgedeza and other Team Shosholoza crewmembers have become new heroes for children who are turning away from crime, returning to school, and embracing sailing as a way to give new meaning to their lives. Sunsail/Paradise Found #11: Green Key and The Indians
All of our cruisers come together for a visit to Green Key off of Little Jost Van Dyke. During a stroll down the beach, there are lots of stories to share. Next, there is snorkeling at The Indians: four rocks that rise from the ocean floor to a height of 90 feet. Located next to tiny Pelican Island just north of Norman Island, the bottom is just 50 feet deep. The Indians offer our cruisers a chance to swim amongst a wide variety of tropical fish and brilliantly colored corals. Stay tuned for Episode 12, Million Dollar View, the final episode of Paradise Found: Saling the BVI. TheSailingChannel.Com brings Gary Jobson’s outstanding film about sailing the British Virgin Islands to video podcasting. Sunsail, the world’s largest sailing vacation company, wanted to showcase it’s British Virgin Islands fleet. So it ran a contest among its former charter customers. The winners, a family and two couples, would cruise free while staring in a promotional video produced and narrated by sailing legend Gary Jobson–not a bad deal! BMW Oracle Yacht Racing Keel
The BMW ORACLE America’s Cup racing yacht features a state-of-the-art keel that accounts for 19 of the vessel’s 24 legal tons. Designing and manufacturing the keel posed an exceptional engineering challenge. Engineers needed to balance strength with maximum hydrodynamic efficiency. The keel’s bulb or “bomb” must be heavy enough to keep the yacht upright and stable. At the same time the keelfin and bulb must have limited resistance to water flow to maintain maximum boat speed. Further complicating the design is the fact that the keel tends to vibrate as the yacht increases speed. These vibrations transfer to the hull affecting the yacht’s structural integrity. To improve the yacht’s stiffness, BMW engineers have applied similar technology used in stiffening the companies motor cars. They’ve also refined the shape and position of the keel wings to increase boat speed.
