Sunsail/Paradise Found #7: The Baths to Anegada
The Morrisons and Riglers take a group jump into the sea at The Baths. Then they continue their BVI cruise with a sail to the “drowned” island of Anegada. Anegada means drowned land. Its highest point is only 28 feet and much of the island’s interior consists of salt ponds. But at the water’s edge, sandy beaches abound. Note that making landfall is a bit tricky since Anegada is guarded by one of the world’s largest coral reefs. Stay tuned for Episode 7, Anegada Getaway. TheSailingChannel.Com brings Gary Jobson’s outstanding film about sailing the British Virgin Islands to video podcasting. Sunsail, the world’s largest sailing vacation company, wanted to showcase it’s British Virgin Islands fleet. So it ran a contest among its former charter customers. The winners, a family and two couples, would cruise free while staring in a promotional video produced and narrated by sailing legend Gary Jobson–not a bad deal! The Indians offer our cruisers a chance to swim amongst a wide variety of tropical fish and brilliantly colored corals. Closing in on 200,000 miles of blue water voyaging, Lin and Larry Pardey are recognized as the sailing world’s most experienced and knowledgeable cruising couple. In Storm Tactics, they provide a detailed look at the techniques and gear that have kept them safe at sea. “… I wanted to show how the sailor’s safety valve–heaving-to-works, and the slick it creates. It’s hard for people to imagine the almost magic effect of a slick as it saps the power of breaking waves….” – Larry Pardey. “One of the reasons I wanted to sail east-to-west around Cape Horn was to take video shots proving that small vessels can safely weather storms if they are well outfitted and efficiently handled,” Larry Pardey stated after his record-breaking voyage. Lin and Larry completed their against-the-wind rounding of the Great Southern Capes on board their engineless 29-foot Taleisin, weathering nine days of storm-force winds to reach Puerto Montt in Chile. There they interviewed several high-latitude voyagers, prepared the narrative, and shot further detailed footage to complete the Storm Tactics video, a project Lin and Larry conceived almost ten years ago. Read more about Storm tactics at http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/storm_tactics/about_storm_tactics.htm Add the Storm Tactics Handbook, 3rd Ed. to the Video and you’ve got the ultimate reference set. Just revised, the 3rd Edition will be available early April 2008. Take advantage of pre-publication pricing: just $19.95. Post publication price: $22.95. Modern methods of heaving-to for survival in extreme conditions. As in the first two editions of this book, Lin and Larry describe their concerns about the tendency of modern sailors to discard the classic methods used to bring sailing vessels of all sizes from vast clipper ships to tiny yachts through amazingly strong winds and heavy seas. There is only one storm tactic that has the ability to sap the power of breaking seas, they explain. With clear and concise diagrams, they proceed to show how heaving-to works and how even the most modern of yachts can be made to heave-to, whether with only sail power or with the assistance of a sea anchor. http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/pardey_videos_books/books/storm_tactics_handbook.htm Mario Vittone, a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer for 14 years, in an unsolicited testimony, wrote: I have been on several rescues (and heard of many more) that would have been completely unnecessary if the sailboat captains aboard would have . . . practiced the skills taught by Lin and Larry Pardey. Not knowing how to heave-to in bad weather is as inexcusable as not knowing red, right, return . This is the ninth and final episode in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America’s Cup Racing Yacht. You can view the full 22-minute video at Sail.tv In this final episode, we learn about the two Bow Men who make up the foredeck team and run the front of the boat. Their main responsibility is to prepare, set, dose, and pack the spinnaker and head sails as quickly and correctly as possible. During the pre-start, the Bow Men play a critical role in signaling the distance to the start line and the position of opponents to the Helmsman. The Bow Men must possess a high level of agility, athleticism, and strength as they perform acrobatic maneuvers to adjust the spinnaker pole and sails at the business end of an America’s Cup racing yacht. Once a year, local and national attention focuses on the Annapolis Harbor or, as some like to call it, the Gulf of Eastport for a competition unlike any in the world: the Slaughter Across the Water. It is the longest tug of war over a body of water in the world. The Tug is staged between the Maritime Republic of Eastport, the MRE, and Downtown Annapolis, featuring a 1700 rope, over 350 tuggers, and more than a thousand spectators. The Tug transforms Downtown Annapolis and Eastport with a festival-like atmosphere that includes food vendors, cheering crowds, and all sorts of local color. The Tug draws on the rivalry between Eastport and the City of Annapolis, with civic pride on both sides allowing this zany event to improve more than community morale. The MRE has raised more than $180,000 for charities over the past eight years. Read more about the 2006 Tug… What is MRE? Like any great movement, the concept for the Maritime Republic of Eastport began in a local pub over a couple mugs of beer. The prime mission was to find a creative way to promote and encourage the patronage of Eastport businesses that were destined to be hurt by the Maryland State Highway Administration’s shutting down for repair of the drawbridge connecting mainland Annapolis with the Eastport peninsula. The citizens of Eastport took advantage of their isolation to sever their social, political and economic ties as well. Read more about the MRE on their website…. Sunsail/Paradise Found #5: Nature’s Little Secrets
The Morrisons and Riglers visit Jost Van Dyke and take in some laid back BVI shopping and culture. “No shoes, no shirt, no problem” reads one inviting sign at a local shop. For the inquisitive visitor, the BVI lives up to its motto: Nature’s Little Secrets.” Early mariners from Venezuela were the first to visit the BVIs around the year 900AD. Chris Columbus came ashore on his second voyage in 1493. In the seventeenth century, Pirates found safe haven in the BVI’s many hidden coves. The Spanish and Dutch were the first Europeans to occupy the BVI followed by the British who exported sugar, molasses and rum. Today, the locals still fish and farm, but also participate in the new vacation economy. Stay tuned for Episode 6, The Baths.
