Single Vessel Label Program Discontinued
Transport Canada has decided to discontinue the Single Vessel Label Program before the regulations contained within the Canada Shipping Act 2001 come into effect (the Act came into force on July 1, 2007). Vessels that are not serially produced will no longer be required to have a Single Vessel Label. If your boat does not presently have a Capacity or Conformity Label, you will no longer be required to obtain one. Derek Hatfield qualifies for Round the World Race
Canadian sailor Derek Hatfield officially qualified to enter the Vendee Globe 2008 singlehanded non-stop race around the world by completing the qualifier race, Transat Ecover B2B, from Brazil to France. His Canadian-built Open 60, Spirit of Canada will carry the official race number; #15. Hatfield is the only Canadian in the race and will be the first Canadian team to attempt the race. The Vendee Globe, is a single-handed yacht race, non-stop eastward around the world via the southern oceans, starting in France in November 2008.Hatfield is currently sailing the boat back to Canada to work on it and raise the additional money required for the venture. He has raised funds through corporate donations and his “Around Together” campaign that puts small donors’ names on the hull for a small donation. Canadian Paddlers in all 12 Olympic Events
For the first time ever, Canada will race in all 12 sprint canoe and kayak races at the Olympic Games. Canada’s previous highest number of boats qualified was 10 in 2004. Events are K-1 500m Men, K-1 1000m Men, K-2 500m Men, K-2 1000m Men, K-4 1000m Men, C-1 500m Men, C-1 1000m Men, C-2 500m Men, C-2 1000m Men, K-1 500m Women, K-2 500m Women, K-4 500m Women.Some of the qualifiers are Kristin Gauthier of Ottawa.
