Beware of Dangerous Roads As Winter Begins, Seattle Auto Accident Attorney Cautions

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) December 23, 2011
With winter officially beginning December 22, its time for Washington State motorists to prepare for hazardous cold-weather road conditions, Seattle auto accident attorney Dean Brett said today.
Driving can be treacherous in inclement winter weather, said Brett, of the Seattle personal injury firm of Brett Murphy Washingtons Injury Lawyers. Snow and freezing rain can make the roads slick and reduce visibility. As travelers hit the road for the Christmas holidays, they need to exercise special caution to avoid serious crashes.
Icy roads and freezing fog have already caused dangerous accidents on Washington highways. A state trooper flipped his car on I-90 near the Puget Sound due to black ice earlier this month, and a half-dozen more accidents have been attributed to winter weather, according to King 5 news.
Its not an issue of inexperience. Even people with considerable experience driving in winter weather conditions are vulnerable to accidents, said Brett, who represents clients in auto accident cases in Seattle and throughout Washington State. The roads become unpredictable in icy conditions, so no one is immune from harm.
According to vehicle crash data from the Washington State Department of Transportation, winter weather conditions such as snow, ice, slush and freezing rain accounted for nearly 1,800 car collisions in the state during 2010.
In addition, December was the third most dangerous month for Washington drivers, with more than 9,300 vehicle wrecks that caused 39 deaths, 170 serious injuries and more than 2,600 minor injuries.
There are a number of steps that motorists can take to be safe during the winter months, according to Brett.
Some of the most important safety measures are common-sense ones, such as budgeting in extra time so that you can drive more slowly to work or to take your kids to school, the Seattle accident attorney said.
Its also the season for holiday parties, Brett added. Paying attention to your alcohol intake at these events is crucial. Drunk driving is never acceptable, but couple that with slippery roadways, and youve got a recipe for tragedy.
Other safety steps relate specifically to vehicle maintenance. Brett offered the following suggestions to drivers in hazardous winter weather:

Binghamton Car Accident Attorney Urges New York Motorists to Use Caution with Holiday Travel
Binghamton, NY (PRWEB) December 23, 2011
New York motorists should exercise extra caution on the roads now that winter is officially underway and, according to a recent USA Today report, millions of drivers will be on the roads for the holidays, Binghamton car accident attorney Scott C. Gottlieb said today.
Millions of families will be traveling to see loved ones over the holidays, said Gottlieb, whose Binghamton personal injury firm, Scott C. Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney, regularly handles auto accident and wrongful death lawsuits. The extra traffic congestion can make roads even more hazardous, particularly in inclement winter weather.
Around 84 million people are expected to hit the roads for the holidays this year, according to a USA Today report that cited forecasts from the AAA travel organization.
Drivers who are caught up in the rush to get last-minute presents or to attend holiday events are more likely to get distracted behind the wheel, which can be deadly in winter weather, said Gottlieb. Icy and snowy road conditions demand extra attention, not the opposite.
Alcohol is a big contributing factor in holiday accidents, Gottlieb added. Last year, 415 people died in alcohol-related crashes during the second half of December alone, according to the National Highway Transportation Administration.
The flood of holiday parties and time off work means that people have more time to socialize, and that can include drinking, Gottlieb said. Designating a driver is a simple way to prevent catastrophic accidents at any time of year, and it is especially critical in freezing and slippery conditions.
The Binghamton personal injury attorney added that even the most experienced driver is vulnerable to harm while driving in winter weather.
All of the driving experience in the world cannot protect you if the motorist in the car beside you chooses to drive recklessly, he said. However, if an accident does happen and you are injured, New York law can protect you.

Two marine-industry leaders in LED lighting and safety controls announced the formation of the Marine Industry Safety Energy Affiliates (MISEA) Group. The MISEA Group (pronounced: “My-Sea”) unites Orca Green Marine (OGM), and Signal Mate to create a single one-stop solution center for making a boat as safe and energy efficient as possible. The MISEA Group’s full line of harsh-environment and navigation light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and safety-control solutions enables recreational, commercial and military marine users to be safe on the water and save money in the process.
Whether boaters are looking for a way to live aboard off-grid for long-term voyaging or simply want to spend less money on fuel, the MISEA Group provides consumers with LED lights, safety monitors and controls innovated, designed and manufactured in the United States. Even better, the MISEA Group, in conjunction with other companies in a Yacht to be Green™ consortium, will launch a new initiative in the coming months that enables the conscientious boat owner to implement the safest, most efficient energy plan afloat quickly and affordably through a Renewable Energy Specialist program coordinated with more than 175 local riggers and boatyards nationwide and centralized through a single website: http://www.miseagroup.com.
“It’s about small US businesses coming together and helping each other get through a tough economy while simultaneously offering a unique solution to boaters faced with increasing costs of enjoying their time on the water,” said Meghan Matthews, founder of OGM and principal in the MISEA Group. “This alignment allows us to offer broad energy and safety solutions to our boat builder customers as well as a streamlined business relationship with our wholesale distributors and retailers.”
The MISEA Group’s Yacht to be Green™ RES program enables boaters to get a custom audit by a local installer certified by the MISEA Group’s energy experts. The audit criteria lets boaters know what their energy demands are based on their lifestyle, and also how those demands can be met in the most economical and efficient manner possible.
In the coming weeks, boaters can visit the MISEA Group website (http://www.miseagroup.com) for a list of Yacht to be Green Renewable Energy Specialists and to qualify for a free audit. Once the audit is complete, the MISEA site will allow them to determine which options best fit their budgets and provides discounts on installation of the MISEA products by a certified local rigger or boatyard.
“This is only the first phase of our vision for the MISEA Group and the Yacht to be Green consortium,” says Matthews. “One of the inspiring aspects of our industry is the capacity to work together to make a difference.”

Washington Injury Lawyer Applauds New System Aimed at Reducing Fatigue-Related Truck Crashes
Washington Injury Lawyer Applauds New System Aimed at Reducing Fatigue-Related Truck Crashes
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) November 29, 2011
Washington injury lawyer Dean Brett voiced support today for a new Washington State Patrol computer screening program that monitors truck drivers’ on-duty sleep habits.
According to a WSP news release, the new computer system has been installed at 12 weigh stations and ports of entry throughout the state.
The system allows WSP officers to pinpoint log book violations by scanning the truck’s license plate information and forwarding it on to surrounding weigh stations. Patrol officers will then be able to cross-check the time that trucks pass through those weigh stations against the self-reported data in the log books.
The initiative could dramatically curb the number of fatigue-related truck crashes throughout Washington state, according to Brett, who represents victims of truck and car accidents in personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits in Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, Bellingham and surrounding areas.
“It’s important to get truck drivers off the road if they’re driving for longer stints, and it’s not just because they are breaking the law,” Brett said. “They are endangering the lives of other motorists and pedestrians, not to mention their own.”
Approximately 30-40 percent of truck accidents are caused by driver fatigue, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Other federal data show that each year, more than 750 people die and 20,000 are injured in truck crashes due to driver fatigue.
Federal laws require drivers to comply with strict hours-of-service regulations that dictate how many hours they can stay on the road during one shift. The current limit is 11 hours behind the wheel at a time, but only after a 10-hour rest period.
“The problem is that truck drivers do not always comply with the regulations,” said Brett, whose firm has recovered millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements on behalf of personal injury victims throughout Washington state. “Many operators are paid by the mile, so they have an incentive to stay on the road as long as possible.”
Another problem is that many drivers of large trucks – also known as commercial motor vehicles, tractor-trailers, 18-wheelers and semi-trucks – are being cited nationwide for falsifying log books that document how long they are on the roads, Brett said.
According to a driver fatigue and alertness study conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, most truck drivers are not good at assessing their own levels of alertness on the roads when compared against objective physiological measures.
“Truck drivers have a tough job to do. The routes they drive can be monotonous and somewhat hypnotic, which increases the likelihood of drowsy driving even for the most experienced operators,” Brett said.
The Washington injury attorney added that truck accidents often lead to more fatalities and catastrophic injuries than other types of wrecks because of the sheer size difference between a tractor-trailer and the average car or SUV.
“Sadly, it’s often the other motorist – not the truck driver – who bears the brunt of the injuries,” he explained. “And sometimes the injuries are catastrophic, resulting in permanent injuries that alter victims’ lives forever.”
When truck accidents happen, an experienced accident attorney can explain how state personal injury laws and federal regulations can help families obtain compensation for injuries suffered in the wreck.
“Even though most truck drivers are safe and responsible on the roads, the reality is that driver fatigue causes accidents all too frequently,” Brett said. “Lawyers, along with the efforts of agencies like the Washington State Patrol, can help families receive justice when they have been wronged.”
