Resorts of North Muskoka Announces Changes for Spring and Summer

The Resorts of North Muskoka group (http://www.north-muskoka.com), a collection of 14 resort properties located between Huntsville and Algonquin Park, is pleased to announce exciting changes at member resorts and the latest news for the busy upcoming spring and summer Muskoka tourist season. The group is comprised of small and midsized housekeeping cottage resorts, all inclusive resorts, lodges and Inns. Each spring, the resorts work hard to prepare their properties for the upcoming busy seasons. Grounds need to be cleaned up, cabins need to be painted, and renovations completed. Spring is also the time when many resorts fine tune their marketing strategies and develop a variety of special accommodation packages to entice guests. The following are some of latest changes and news from our member resorts, states Resorts of North Muskoka group member and spokesman Jeremy Fleming.
The Pines Cottage Resort on Oxtongue Lake has completed renovations of 2 cabins with new roofs, siding and decks. In addition, they have added new kayaks and beach furniture. Beauview Cottage Resort on Lake of Bays has a new Experiences page on their website to answer that age old question: what is there to do? Some experiences highlighted include, catch your first fish, make smores, tackle the Beauview Wipe-out Zone on the water, and get close to a wild moose in Algonquin Park. Tally Ho Inn on Peninsula Lake has freshened up two cabins with new paint. They are offering off season rates until June 30th and 13-20% off guided tours and rentals with Back Country Tours, if booked with them. The Resorts of North Muskoka groups newest member, Clyffe House Cottage Resort, has added a Lazer Sailboat to their mini fleet of 18 boats. They now offer linen and catering services. Waterskiing and tubing rates for 2012 will be a very reasonable $ 70/hour. To help spend more time playing and less time chasing balls, they have added a chain link fence around their tennis court. Foxwood Resort on Lake of Bays is excited to have a new ski boat for waterskiing, wakeboarding and tubing. Tennis courts resurfacing will be completed this spring. Availability is very tight for July and August at this popular resort, but they still have a couple vacancies. Lumina Resort on Lake of Bays is offering a special on June 15th and 16th weekend where 2 kids are free and adults pay $ 300 each including 2 meals per day. They have a Canada Day weekend special as well at $ 450 per adult with 2 kids free. The Norsemen Walker Lake Resort has added free wifi and doubled its water activities with new kayaks, paddle boards and fishing boats. Due to popular demand they are continuing Monday Night Bistros with gourmet pizza, wings, ribs and pasta. Bondi Village Resort on Lake of Bays is expanding their disc golf course to twelve holes. They plan to do some interpretive markers and guides for use on the hiking trails and have added an inflatable climbing iceberg to the water toys. Cedar Grove Lodge on Peninsula Lake has been busy with flooring and roofing renovations as well as painting. They will have a new main dock in time for the summer and are also looking to get a small disc golf course going.
We are excited about all the great changes taking place at our resorts this year. Most of the Resorts of North Muskoka properties have been in the same family for decades, and all are owner operated. Nationwide Incorporators Reminds Taxpayers to Take Advantage of a Home-Office Deduction to Reduce Taxes

There is more to qualifying for a home-office deduction than just having a room at home that doubles as an office. Even if a business is home-based, it doesn’t automatically qualify a taxpayer for the home-office tax deduction according to Nationwide Incorporators, an attorney-staffed online incorporation service. There are specific requirements that must be met, records that must be kept, and limitations that apply. The Internal Revenue Code requires that a designated portion of the home be used regularly and exclusively as a principal place of business, says Mike Ross, an attorney and founder of Nationwide Incorporators. You can be a homeowner or a renter and your home can be an apartment, condominium, mobile home or even a boat.
Regular and Exclusive Use
Regular use does not have to be daily use, but if a designated space is used only occasionally or incidentally, Ross says it will not meet the regular use requirement. Ross also states that the Code does not require the space to be a separate room or even a partitioned area in a room as long as it is a separately identifiable space. However, Ross says the deduction will not be available if the space is used by anyone for personal reasons in addition to the business use.
Principal Place for Conducting Business
Ross described several ways to meet the requirement that the home is the principal place for conducting business. It will be met if the home is used exclusively and regularly for administrative or management activities such as maintaining books and records, billing, ordering supplies and writing orders or reports, among others. It may also be met if a person (a) regularly and exclusively uses part of the home to meet with clients, patients or customers, or (b) exclusively and regularly uses a free-standing structure to conduct business even if it is not the principal place for business. This could be a studio, workshop, barn or garage, Ross said.
Using the Home-Office Deduction for an Employee
The home-office deduction is not just for a home-based business. Ross says the deduction may also available to an employee who uses part of the home for business if the tests discussed above are met plus (1) the business use must be for the convenience of the employer (not merely appropriate and helpful), and (2) the area used to perform services for the employer are not rented to the employer.
Additional Considerations for the Home-Office Deduction
When these requirements are met, Ross states that it is still necessary to calculate the amount of the deduction that can be taken, which involves several factors such as calculating the percentage of the home used for business, the specific type of expense involved, and whether any deduction limit applies. “Direct expenses are those relating solely to the space used for business and are generally fully deductible. Indirect expenses, such as utilities and insurance, relate to both the business and non-business use spaces of the home and only the business use portion is deductible. Lastly, unrelated expenses pertaining to only non-business use areas are not deductible as home-office expenses,” Ross says.
Keep Good Records and Get Financial Advice
“Anyone who regularly uses a portion of his home for business purposes should consult with a financial advisor to review these requirements in detail and ensure that the proper use of the home is made to take advantage of the home-office deduction. This includes a plan for maintaining adequate records including cancelled checks, receipts, work orders, and other evidence of expenses that have been paid,” says Ross.
