With 90 percent of Americans living within an hour of a body of water, there are a variety of ways to plan a fun, affordable on-the-water escape this summer.”
Whether considering boat ownership, planning an on-the-water getaway, or just looking to learn the ropes, Discover Boating share tips to get off the dock with family and friends this summer:
Rent or Charter. Easy renting isn’t just for movies. Boat rentals can be surprisingly simple to do and come in a variety of forms, from hourly and daily rentals to week-long charters. Renting is the perfect way to compare boat types and explore local waterways for those not quite ready for boat ownership. Multi-day chartering is another option to help save on trip expenses, such as food, lodging and activities, which can often be negotiated into the overall cost of a chartering package.
Share Time … and Costs. Fractional boat ownership, similar to lodging timeshares, are cost-effective ways to have access to new boats and be able to share costs among a group of friends or other local boaters. Members pre-schedule use of the boat online and often receive the added benefit of lessons, flotillas and additional crew, if needed.
Membership has its Rewards. Local boating clubs and organizations can be found around the U.S. Whether looking for watersports, sailing or yacht clubs, there are options available to allow inexperienced boaters to test the waters through access to classroom and on-water trainings, a fleet of boats and member events.
Test the Waters. Cars aren’t the only thing you can test drive. Visit a local boat dealer to “try before you buy” and take a boat for test drive to learn what fits your budget and interests. Similar to shopping for a car, test driving several boat types will help even the most experienced boater make a selection that best fits their lifestyle.

Boating Safety – 5 Tips to Be Safe on the Water
Riding on a boat is a normally pretty safe activity, but there are a few things to consider. For boating safety follow these 5 tips to be safe on the water and ensure you’ll have many more fun, safe, days to come.
– Never go out on the water without life vests. A surprising number of people ignore this advice, but it really is essential, which is why it’s listed here first. Even if you are a really strong swimmer if you fall in the water you may hit your head, or be temporarily confused from falling in. During that time your life vest will be working to pull you up to the surface so you can breathe, in which case you’ll be really grateful that you wore it.
– Wear water helmets when participating in water sports. This is again for the reason above that you may hit your head and be unable to help yourself, which is a particular danger when you’re participating in water sports.
– Avoid drinking alcohol before boating. Drinking by the lake can be fun, but don’t do it before getting on a boat. If you fall into the water after drinking alcohol you are in an extremely dangerous situation.
– Follow posted regulations. These signs can easily become just a part of the background, but they are there for a reason. Often there will be unique weather concerns in a particular location, and if you read the posted regulations you’ll be aware of things to avoid in this particular location.
– You need to be a strong swimmer. Its easy to ignore this, thinking you’re going to be on the boat so you’re fine, but accidents happen. Falling into the water isn’t usually a big deal, it’s a fairly common occurrence, but if you aren’t a strong swimmer it can be fatal. Be smart about it.

Summer Water Safety Tip: How to Fit and Borrow a Child’s Life Jacket

Summer will soon be here and for many parents, this may be the first time your family goes boating. To make sure everyone is ready, the non-profit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has three free online resources at www.BoatUS.com/foundation/LJLP/fit_video.asp to make sure the kids are safe:
How to properly fit a kid’s life jacket: Having a child wear an adult or incorrectly sized life jacket could be as dangerous as having no life jacket at all, giving parents a false sense of security. A short online video explains how to fit a right-sized life jacket to your child.
How to borrow a kid’s life jacket if you don’t have one: Boaters don’t always have every kid-sized life jacket aboard. However, the BoatUS Foundation has over 500 locations across the country — local marinas, fire departments and other waterfront businesses — where parents can borrow a kid’s life jacket (in various sizes) for the day or weekend, absolutely free. The Web site allows parents to search for a Kid’s Life Jacket Loaner location near them. The program loaned out over 90,000 life jackets last year, and three lives have been saved to date.
Know your state’s life jacket laws: Confused about who needs a life jacket? The Web site has a state-by-state listing of life jacket regulations.
